Football dropping odds: how to read and use them

Football is where most dropping odds are watched: the biggest betting markets, the most leagues and the most bookmakers. It is also where it's easiest to misread a move, because one match has three-way markets, Asian handicap lines and goal totals that all move at once. This guide explains what each one tells you and how to turn a drop into a bet you can check.

Why football is the main market for dropping odds

Football attracts the largest betting volumes in the world, so the sharpest bookmakers accept big stakes on its main markets in the top leagues. High limits mean that when a price moves, it usually costs someone real money to move it, and that makes the move informative. The same match is also priced by hundreds of recreational bookmakers, many of which copy the sharp line with a delay. That delay is what dropping odds alerts try to catch. The general idea is in dropping odds explained.

The three football markets to watch

1X2 (home, draw, away)

A three-way market. When one outcome drops, at least one of the others lengthens. Never judge a 1X2 drop from one price: remove the margin using all three prices to see the fair odds, with the no-vig calculator or the vig calculator.

Asian handicap

A two-way market with half and quarter lines (−0.5, −0.75, −1). Two different things can move: the price of a line (−0.5 at 1.95 falling to 1.80) and the line itself (−0.5 moving to −0.75). They are not the same and can't be compared directly. A line move changes the bet; a price move changes how much you are paid for the same bet. See Asian handicap explained.

Total goals (over/under)

Also two-way, with lines such as 2.5 or 2.75 goals. Totals react to line-ups (a missing striker or goalkeeper), weather and the importance of the match. A drop in the over price and a move of the line from 2.5 to 2.75 may both say the same thing about expected goals, but only one of them is a price drop.

When football prices drop

Which leagues carry the most information?

As a rule, the more money a league handles, the more informative its drops. Top leagues and major competitions have high limits at sharp bookmakers; smaller leagues, youth and lower divisions have low limits, and a big percentage drop there can be one bet moving a thin market. Weigh each drop by the maximum stake the reference market accepts, which BetTheDrop shows on every alert.

A football example: a drop in the home win

The reference bookmaker moves a match from 2.60 / 3.30 / 2.85 to 2.20 / 3.50 / 3.30 (home / draw / away). The home price has dropped 15.4%. After removing the margin (4.3% at the new prices) the fair odds of the home win are 2.272, which is a probability of 44.0% instead of 37.2% before the move. What a bookmaker's home price is worth now:

Your bookmaker's home priceEdge against fair 2.272Verdict
2.60 (hasn't moved)+14.4%Value
2.40+5.6%Value
2.30+1.2%Marginal: only with a small minimum edge
2.20 (the dropped price)−3.2%No value

You can run your own numbers with the dropping odds calculator (two-way) or the no-vig calculator (three-way).

Frequently asked questions

What are football dropping odds?

Football prices that fall sharply at the sharpest bookmakers, usually because of team news or informed money, before the match starts.

Are football dropping odds reliable?

A big drop in a high-limit market is a meaningful signal, but it doesn't make the dropped price a good bet. The value is at bookmakers that haven't moved yet, and only if their price is above the fair price.

When do football odds drop the most?

Around team news: injuries and suspensions in the days before, and line-ups about an hour before kick-off in most top competitions.

How do I read a 1X2 drop?

Look at all three outcomes, not only the one that dropped, and remove the margin to get the fair odds before comparing with your bookmaker.

What's the difference between a price drop and a line move in Asian handicap?

A price drop changes the odds of the same line (−0.5 at 1.95 to 1.80). A line move changes the line itself (−0.5 to −0.75). They are different bets and can't be compared directly.
