How +EV betting works, in American odds
Every sportsbook price has a margin. At −110 / −110 you pay about 4.8% on every bet, so even a coin flip is −EV. To find +EV you need the fair line: the sharpest market's price with that margin taken out. If your sportsbook pays more than the fair line, the bet is +EV; if it pays less, it isn't, however much you like the pick.
EV = (your decimal odds × fair probability) − 1. At −110 (1.909) on a side whose fair probability is 55%, EV = 1.909 × 0.55 − 1 = +5.0%. The free expected value calculator does it for you and takes American odds.
Example: an NBA points prop after the news
A star's points prop is Over 24.5 at −115 / Under −105 at Pinnacle: the fair line on the over is about −105 (51.2%), so −115 anywhere is −EV. Then a teammate is ruled out and Pinnacle moves the over to −145 / +120. The fair line on the over is now about −133 (57.0%).
| Your sportsbook, Over 24.5 | Fair line | Expected value |
|---|---|---|
| −115 (before the news) | −105 | −4.4% |
| −115 (still not moved) | −133 | +6.6% |
| +105 (slow to react) | −133 | +16.9% |
That window is short: books that price hundreds of props a night update them in batches, and the edge closes the moment they catch up. That's why BetTheDrop sends the move to Telegram within seconds. The method is in how to find +EV player props.
What makes +EV software worth paying for
- A sharp reference: Pinnacle's line, not an average of soft books that are wrong together.
- A good devig: we take the margin out with the power method, which doesn't overrate long shots.
- Speed you can check: the time from the move to your phone, measured and published.
- The fair line in every alert: so the decision takes seconds, not a spreadsheet.
- Closing line value (CLV): the clearest sign of a real edge. Every BetTheDrop alert is measured against the fair closing line and the last 30 days are public in alert results.
- A free way to start: a free Telegram channel and 7 days of Pro free.

Before you start
- Have accounts at more than one licensed sportsbook where betting is legal for you: +EV is about taking the best line available.
- Use flat stakes of 1-2% of your bankroll: even +EV bets lose often. See bankroll management.
- Expect limits: soft books restrict accounts that keep beating the close. See why bookmakers limit accounts.
- No software can promise profit. 18+ only, and read our responsible gambling page.
